January 2012

Over the past three years, ARE members have supported the student group Watts Youth Voices (WYV) atLocke High. WYV meets regularly after school and works to supports students in three areas: college access, counter-narrative storytelling, and community organizing. This year, students have identified the need to address the growing tension between the different small learning communities at Locke High. In their last meeting on January 12th, WYVcollectivized the proposal to hold a weeklong action in April to address the violence on their campus. WYV will lead a series of assemblies for their peers on the issues of divide and conquer and Black and Brown unity. The week will culminate with an event later this school year featuring spoken word and videos created by students surrounding the theme “One Locke, One Love.”

On January 12, 2012, a forum on the Privatization of Education took place at Central Region High School (CRHS) #16 in response to the differential treatment CRHS students are seeing between themselves and students attending the charter school at CRHS. The forum introduced students to the charter schools and the political economic forces steering the privatization of public education today.  The day began with a general introduction to privatization, the screening of the documentary Granito de Arena, which speaks to privatization globally, and a workshop on developing political fliers.  Santos Zuniga of SomosRazaled the last segment, which involved strategizing around the community forum on violence scheduled for February 22nd.
